Compress a video online.
It stays in this browser. Nothing is uploaded. Open the network panel if you want to check.
MP4 or MOV, up to 500 MB. It stays in this browser.
How it works
The page reads the video on your computer and re-encodes it with the encoder built into the browser, then gives you a new H.264 MP4. That is different from a typical online compressor, which uploads the file and encodes it on a server you cannot see.
It is also different from Compresslyon iPhone. The app uses the phone’s hardware encoder, works on the clips already in Photos — including High Efficiency video this browser may not open — and saves the result into a separate album without touching the original.
Use this page for a file that is already on a computer. Use the app when the video is still on the phone. The trade-off is the same either way: a smaller file gives up some picture detail. When to use which.
Frequently asked
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. The file is read and re-encoded in your browser. Open the network panel while it runs and you should not see the video leave your computer. We never receive the file or its name.
- Will the quality drop?
- Yes, some. Compression throws picture information away so the file can be smaller. Smaller drops the most and caps the long edge at 720p. Balanced targets 1080p. Higher keeps the original dimensions and compresses more lightly. If the new file is larger, the original was already efficient — keep it.
- Which formats work?
- MP4 and MOV that the browser can decode, written back out as an H.264 MP4. iPhone videos recorded in High Efficiency are often HEVC. Desktop Chrome frequently cannot decode those. Safari on a Mac often can. When the browser cannot read the file, the Compressly app on iPhone can, because it uses the phone’s own encoder.
- Why would the file get bigger?
- A video that is already tightly compressed does not always shrink when it is encoded again. The page shows both sizes. Download the new file only if it is actually smaller, or if you needed a plain H.264 MP4.
- How is this different from the iPhone app?
- This page is for a file that is already on a computer. The app is for videos in your iPhone library. It uses the phone’s hardware encoder, leaves the originals untouched, saves the copy into a Compressly album, and can batch up to 20 videos with Compressly PRO.
- Is there a size limit?
- 500 MB per file. The result is built in memory, and larger files will stall or crash a tab. One video at a time.
For the videos already on your iPhone, Compressly compresses them on the phone. Originals stay untouched.
